About Holualoa
Among the misty slopes of the Hualalai Volcano, just south of Kailua-Kona, lies our charming artist community of Holualoa. In Hawaiian, the word “holualoa” means “long slide.” These hōlua courses were painstakingly constructed lava-gravel pathways, originally thought to be used for ritualistic purposes. Riders hurtle downhill on sleds at over 50 miles pre hour, mimicking the way the lava flowed down creating the islands 30 million years before. Holualoa has a rich past, dating back to the Hawaiian Kingdom when it was originally established as an agricultural area because of its fertile soil and ample rainfall. The area has been dominated by coffee trees since it was first planted here in 1828. Many of the historic buildings from when Mamalahoa Highway was the only route around the island are still in use today. Although Holualoa Village is a trendy hub for artists in the Kona Districts, it’s maintained a small-town atmosphere that’s rare to find in today’s contemporary hustle and bustle world. Visitors can stroll through the shops to discover local art like handcrafted jewelry, paintings, sculptures and photography. With breath taking views of the Pacific Ocean, one can feel as if they’re at the edge of the world.
